Your hangover symptoms will vary depending on your actions from the night before. Some typical symptoms experienced are headaches, drowsiness, nausea, achy muscles, diarrhoea, slow response and mood swings or the feeling of absolute death. These are all caused by changes in the body natural chemistry, including hormone response, chemical reactions and from the toxic chemicals found in alcohol. When you manage to pull yourself out of bed, aim to refuel the body with all the necessary nutrients and fluids to bring the body back to its normal state. Aim to have food rich in vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre.
Water is the most essential fluid to hydrate your body after a heavy night out. Alcohol actually binds to the water molecules in your body hence the dizziness after a couple. Your body is also losing fluids to the point where water needs to be drawn from any available source such as the brain- hence the headaches. Sports drinks and coconut water will also restore liquids and much needed electrolytes. If you feel like a soothing tea, choose one with less caffeine as it will dehydrate your body even more. Studies show that ginger tea can reduce nausea and motion sickness and peppermint can ease stomach pains.
Stay away from the typical greasy breakfast and citric orange juice as it can irritate a sensitive stomach even more. Try a smoothie with banana and spinach as they are both a great source of potassium and add some berries for extra antioxidants. Or perhaps spinach, eggs and avocado; eggs are full of amino acids which can boost liver function and avocados are packed with antioxidants, both helping to break down the toxic chemicals.
